Today, I had the good fortune of hearing a live performance of Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat, Op. 47. The final movement of this Quartet reveals Schumann’s passion for the counterpoint of Bach. (Robert and his wife, Clara, were known to have enjoyed analyzing Bach’s fugues together.)
The finale starts with a fugue subject by the viola. In decidedly Baroque style, Schumann then gives that line to the piano and the violin, while blending in lyrical textures in keeping with his own more Romantic style.
This is Schumann at his best – influenced by Bach!
